FDCP’S “PARANGAL NG SINING” HONORS THE PILLARS OF PHILIPPINE CINEMA

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) proudly honored visionary artists, pioneers, and trailblazers who have contributed to the growth and global recognition of Philippine cinema during the 3rd Parangal ng Sining, held on April 11, 2025, at Seda Vertis North in Quezon City.
With the theme “Ang Mga Higante ng Kasaysayan ng Ating Pelikula: Tradisyon at Ebolusyon,” the event brought together influential industry figures to celebrate the vital role of cinema in preserving the country’s cultural heritage.
“Pilipino kaya tayo, palaban at mapagmahal sa sining. Ang mga pinarangalan natin ngayon ang patunay ng ating tibay at talento,” said FDCP Chairman & CEO Jose Javier Reyes in his opening remarks.
HONOREES OF THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Joseph Estrada, the iconic actor, producer, and founder of the Mowelfund Film Institute, was honored for his enduring influence in championing cinema as a platform for advocacy and nation-building. The award was presented by veteran actress Boots Anson-Rodrigo and received on his behalf by his son, Senator Jinggoy Estrada.

Charo Santos-Concio, a pillar in Philippine media, was recognized for her transformational leadership and artistic legacy—from her early days on screen to her trailblazing stewardship at ABS-CBN. Her award was presented by Lauren Dyogi, ABS-CBN’s Star Magic Head.

Laurice Guillen, acclaimed actress and director, was recognized for her contributions to independent cinema, particularly through the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. Her award was presented by fellow advocate and former FDCP Chairman and CEO Tirso Cruz III.

Lav Diaz, renowned filmmaker was recognized for his socially resonant and internationally acclaimed films. Actor John Lloyd Cruz presented the award, as Diaz attendees of the ongoing mission of cultural workers to advocate for change.
HONOREES OF THE ANNUAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Judy Ann Santos, an award-winning actress, received recognition for her role in Espantaho, which earned her the Best Actress award at the Fantasporto Film Festival. The Annual Achievement Award was presented by FDCP Chairman and CEO Jose Javier Reyes.

The Annual Achievement Award was also given to Iti Mapupukaw, a groundbreaking Ilocano-language animated film that won the Best Animated Feature at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Directed by Carl Joseph Papa, the film was honored for its innovative use of rotoscope animation and culturally resonant storytelling. The award was presented by Director General of the Film Academy of the Philippines Paolo Villaluna.
In his acceptance speech, Papa emphasized the need to support original Filipino content:
“Philippine animation is alive—and now is the time to take creative risks.”

Sunshine, a fearless and haunting coming-of-age film, was awarded for its bravery in depicting complex truths about abortion and inner struggle. The award was presented by Butch Francisco and accepted by Angeli Bayani, Claudia Diaz Cojuangco, Annika Co, and Geo Lomuntad, who dedicated the film “to all the stories still waiting to be heard.”
A TRIBUTE TO GLORIA ROMERO

A heartfelt tribute was paid to Gloria Romero, the Queen of Philippine Cinema, who rose to stardom during the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema in the 1950s. Known for her timeless beauty and acting versatility, Romero captivated audiences in classics like Dalagang Ilocana (1954), Sino Ang May Sala (1957), and Paru-Parong Bukid (1958), leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

In Memoriam
Parangal ng Sining also paid tribute to the artists, filmmakers, and cultural workers who passed away in the past year. Their invaluable contributions to Philippine cinema were honored through a touching audiovisual presentation that reminded the audience of their enduring legacy.

Hosted by Iza Calzado, the event was brought to life through performances by Jeffrey Hidalgo, and Cookie Chua, Rachel Alejandro, Arman Ferrer, and Nicole Asensio.
Special Launch
The event also marked the official launch of Behind the Reel, a dynamic YouTube series that features in-depth roundtable discussions with notable film industry insiders. The series was formally introduced during the program by FDCP Chairperson and CEO Direk Joey Reyes.
