MANILA, PHILIPPINES, MARCH 24, 2021 — The best in Philippine Cinema from the past year will be recognized by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd) at the 4th Entertainment Editors’ Choice (Eddys) virtual awards night on April 4, Sunday. 

The Eddys, which is in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), will be streamed worldwide for free on the FDCP Channel (fdcpchannel.ph) at 8 p.m. There will be simulcasts on the SPEEd Facebook page as well as on the YouTube channels and Facebook accounts or pages of several SPEEd members.

This is the third time that SPEEd and the FDCP are joining forces for The Eddys, and the 2021 edition will hand awards to top-caliber Filipino films that were shown not just in cinemas but also on digital platforms in 2020.

“In supporting The Eddys again this year, the FDCP is one with SPEEd in recognizing the excellence and resilience of Filipino filmmakers, artists, and talents who persevered amid the pandemic,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

“We are also glad and excited to showcase the 4th Eddys on the FDCP Channel, an exclusive FDCP-managed platform that allows audiences to enjoy quality local and international content online,” added Diño.

SPEEd, an esteemed group of entertainment editors of major broadsheets and tabloids in the Philippines, announced on March 15 the nominees in 14 categories as well as the special awardees.

“Fan Girl” leads The Eddys hopefuls with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Antoinette Jadaone, Best Actress for Charlie Dizon, and Best Actor for Paulo Avelino.

“UnTrue,” meanwhile, received 8 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, Best Actress for Cristine Reyes, and Best Supporting Actress for Rhen Escaño.

Leading the Eddys presenters are Batangas 6th District Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto and Aktor Chairman of the Board Dingdong Dantes. “Star for All Seasons” Santos-Recto, the first Eddys Best Actress for “Everything About Her” in 2017, will present the Best Actress award while Dantes, the 2019 Best Actor for “Sid & Aya,” will present the Best Actor citation.

Another highlight in this year’s Eddys is the launch of the Isah V. Red (IVR) Award in honor and memory of SPEEd’s late founding president. According to SPEEd president Ian Fariñas, the IVR Award will be given to individuals like Red, who is “a dynamic and spirited renaissance man with a deep love for God, country and community — who beyond the realm of entertainment has so enriched and made a difference in the lives of many, in his most colorful, gregarious and inimitable way.”

Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr., Angel Locsin, Kim Chiu, Ramon Ang, Rei Anicoche-Tan, and Claire de Leon-Papa are the IVR Award recipients for their humanitarian efforts toward alleviating conditions of people adversely affected by the pandemic.

In addition, The Eddys Icon Awards will be bestowed on industry veterans Gloria Sevilla, Ronaldo Valdez, Pilar Pilapil, Boots Anson-Rodrigo, Gina Pareño, Dante Rivero, Tommy Abuel, Caridad Sanchez, Joel Lamangan, and Ricky Lee.

The annual Eddys special awardees are columnist and television and radio host Lolit Solis for the Joe Quirino Award, entertainment columnist Mario Bautista for the Manny Pichel Award, Blacksheep Productions for the Rising Producers’ Circle, and The IdeaFirst Company as Producer of the Year.

Finally, departed industry legends Peque Gallaga, Tony Mabesa, Menggie Cobarrubias, Ramon Revilla, Sr. and Tony Ferrer will be given posthumous recognitions.

Established in 2017, The Eddys is SPEEd’s way to uplift and encourage filmmakers, artists, and all others involved in creating quality films by recognizing the best works in the local movie industry annually so that they may continue to entertain and inspire audiences throughout the country and make known the inimitable Filipino talent to rest of the world.
